Adoption support

Who can access adoption support?

Any person affected by adoption can access Adoption Support.  For adopters, your adoption agency will provide support for the first 3 years post the adoption order being granted. Anyone living in Edinburgh, including adults who were adopted and parents of children that have been adopted, can access adoption support from the City of Edinburgh Council’s Adoption Team.

What is adoption support?

Adopters who want to be kept up to date with what is available in Edinburgh can be added to our mailing list by sending an email to adoption@edinburgh.gov.uk and we will send you our Newsletter and let you know of any upcoming information sessions and support groups, connecting you with other families who have adopted.

We recognise that parenting, as well as being very rewarding, can at times be challenging. You may need a social worker to help with issues related to adoption.  You can request adoption support by getting in touch at adoption@edinburgh.gov.uk or 0131 200 4200.  We will agree a support plan with you that would be reviewed at agreed times.

We can help with

  • Bonding with your child
  • Communicating with your child
  • Negotiating with your child/teenager
  • Life story work
  • Support at meetings
  • Referrals to other professionals and services

Adults who were adopted may want support

  • To access your records
  • Advice on how to contact your first family
  • Help to talk through your childhood and adoption experience

Any request for a specialist service related to adoption will be subject to assessment.

If you, and your family need information, guidance or support please contact our Advice Line on 0131 200 4200 or adoption@edinburgh.gov.uk
